Description:

With the growth of the sport on the rise it is really important for us as a community to come together to recruit and support athletes as they train for and compete in their first races. With this in mind, two long time members of the triathlon community have come together in a joint effort to bring more athletes into the sport and offer quality informative sessions for seasoned athletes. In January, Randy McDougald of Carolina Triathlon will begin hosting the monthly meetings and local triathlon coach, Katie Malone, will be organizing a “Couch to Tri” beginners training program. Randy and Katie are dedicated to building an inclusive tri club for the Greenville area that is accessible to everyone. Together they feel they have the resources to be able to put together a club that will serve the Greenville area. *The club will be part of a USA Triathlon and IRONMAN strategic joint effort called My Time to Tri. Thanks to the First Timers Race Free initiative that was started last year by Set-Up Events, they will be able to introduce athletes to their first local races. Training groups will meet weekly on Wednesday evenings starting in April to get athletes ready for the Middle Tyger YMCA Sprint Triathlon on June 6th and the Swamp Rabbit Triathlon at Furman on July 18th. The club will begin meeting in January on Monday the 7th from 6:30-7:30 pm at Carolina Triathlon. The first meeting will be a core class, followed by some social time and Q & A. The goal with many of the meetings will be to share information but also to help members to learn by doing. More information on the club and how to join can be found on the Carolina Triathlon website and Facebook page. There is also a Greenville Triathlon Club Facebook page that will be dedicated to the club. They hope to have a website within the next few months and welcome any volunteers as well as ideas from area athletes. Here is a quick overview of the things they have planned for the year: • Core Training • Learn how to use your Garmin • Beginners Night, all the basics • Racing and Training Nutrition • Bike fitting • All about the differences in gear • Sports Psychology and how to use it • Smart Trainers and how to use them • All about Ironman • Injury prevention • Other subjects by request Randy and Katie are very excited about the chance to bring life back into the Greenville Triathlon Club and hope that athletes who are new to the sport will take advantage of this opportunity. They would love to see previous members of the club return and encourage more experienced athletes to join in to learn from each other and take advantage of many of the unique offerings the club will have. For more information you can reach Randy McDougald at Carolina Triathlon.
